Not your ordinary green detergent

It’s in your dish detergent, polluting waterways to the tune of millions of gallons a year. possibly you should switch to a greener soap and spare all those fish.

Eco-friendly soaps and detergents have been creeping their way into our homes, but a major sort hasn’t eliminated phosphates from its ingredient list—until now, that is. Palmolive’s Eco+ gel detergent does just that.

According to a U.S. Geological Survey, high amounts of phosphate, a common ingredient in many dishwasher detergents, can lead to harmful algae growth that disrupts lakes and streams. What’s more, the average American goes through roughly 150 gallons of water per day, a good chunk of that from dishwashers. Do the math and that’s a lot of algae.

Palmolive’s Eco+ gel detergent is available nationwide for $3 to $6 in three nature-inspired fragrances. I guess “going green” doesn’t necessarily mean going out of your way. —Aynsley Karps
