Soil evaluating and the cycle of life
I tried to grow blueberries, but never had much luck until I got a soil pop quiz kit and determined that the dirt was way-too alkaline for the bushes. Blueberries like acidic soil. Once I used the kit, I knew that I had to lower the pH whether the fruits were to thrive. Thrive they did, but it turns out that birds like blueberries just as they are ripening. that year I’m trying a new tactic: I’ve transplanted the bushes to a location in front of the tall stone foundation that supports the front porch. The cats like to lounge in the sun on the porch. My hope is that they will hang out there and when the birds come for the blueberries the cats will grab the birds before the birds can grab the blueberries. How smart is that? I’ll save money on cat food, plus I’ll get lots of delicious blueberries for muffins and cornflakes.
